Topical Probiotics for Cats

As mentioned in one of our earlier articles on the use of probiotic cleaning products, probiotics are not just for cleaning, using as supplements, or as nutrients for the gut. They can also be used externally on the body.
This article is about topical probiotics for pets, that support the natural microbial balance of your pet’s skin, ears, eyes and teeth.
Probiotics are beneficial microbes that help maintain healthy conditions in all these areas. Suitable for dogs, cats and many other companion animals, including rabbits, birds, gerbils and reptiles.
Spray-on topical probiotics are changing the way we care for our pets. Instead of relying on antibacterial overkill, they work with nature in a gentler, more balanced way to rebalance and maintain a healthy microbial balance. In a healthy microbiome, helpful and neutral microorganisms form a balanced, diverse community. This balance helps prevent the overgrowth of microbes that can cause problems. It’s this natural equilibrium — not the total absence of microbes — that supports stable, resilient environments.
Maintaining microbial balance helps to reduce the risk of infection with pathogenic bacteria in the ears, eyes and skin. It also helps with dental hygiene and preventing problems as a result of plaque and tartar accumulation.
All microorganisms need space, nutrients, and time to survive and thrive. When beneficial probiotic bacteria are introduced in sufficient numbers - such as through probiotic products - they compete successfully for these resources and prevent the overgrowth of less beneficial and disease-causing organisms.
Topical probiotics are live, beneficial microorganisms that you can apply to your pet’s skin or coat, ears, mouth or eye area. Once applied, they help support a healthy balance of microorganisms by naturally encouraging beneficial microbes to thrive and keeping less helpful ones in check.
Skin care
Probiotic skin products work alongside your pet’s natural biology to help maintain healthy skin, reduce odours and support regular care of the coat and sensitive areas.
Topical probiotic products for the skin of pets include sprays, shampoos and foams that introduce beneficial bacteria to the skin. The aim is to balance the microbiome as part of their everyday grooming and hygiene routines. These products can be used for:
- Itching and minor irritation – reducing inflammation and preventing infection
- Wound care for minor grazes, cuts and hot spots – helps fight bacterial infections and speeds up wound healing
- Odour control – safely eliminates organic odour-causing bacteria, reducing skin odours and bedding smells
- Allergy relief – some also use bacterial strains to target environmental allergens (such as pollen and the proteins present in the waste particles of house dust mites) and soothe sensitive skin
- Maintenance – strengthens the skin barrier, creating conditions that are healthier, more stable and longer-lasting, thereby reducing future problems or flare-ups
Most products are sprayed directly onto the skin or coat and left to dry and work their magic on the microbiome. Some products are meant to be applied daily and massaged into the skin until the skin condition improves. Although these products are designed for external use, they are generally safe if licked by the pet.
Probiotics are gaining increased attention as a method for promoting wound healing, to decrease microbial resistance, rather than disinfectants and antibiotics. Traditional wound care typically involves using antiseptic solutions and topical antimicrobial agents that eliminate both beneficial bacteria and pathogens, upsetting the natural balance of skin microbiota. To address this, probiotics have emerged as a promising strategy to regulate inflammation and microbiota balance, potentially improving the healing process.
Ear care
Topical probiotics designed to manage ear issues aim to balance the ear microbiome, reducing inflammation and preventing infections through beneficial bacteria. These products offer a natural alternative to safely clean the ears and manage ear wax build-up, reduce chronic itching and yeast overgrowth and soothe inflammation caused by mites or other irritations.
These ear products work by:
- Natural cleaning – by breaking down organic debris and excess ear wax without harsh chemicals
- Balancing the ear microbiome – introducing beneficial bacteria that occupy space in the ear canal, leaving fewer resources for harmful yeast and bacteria
- Controlling inflammation – to reduce the redness, odour and chronic itching commonly associated with allergies and chronic ear issues
Sprays can be applied directly into the ear canal or sprayed onto a cotton pad or clean cloth, to prevent ear wax build-up and maintain ear hygiene by preventing recurring ear infections. Their use is often recommended 2–4 times per week for prevention, or as needed for treatment. They are typically gentle, safe and designed to avoid causing antibiotic resistance.
Dental hygiene
Topical probiotics for the mouth are designed to reduce plaque, tartar and bad breath by introducing beneficial bacteria that restore microbial balance. These sprays inhibit harmful bacteria that cause inflammation and periodontal disease, providing a natural and easy-to-use supplement, or alternative, to daily brushing.
These products are often effective for reducing bad breath and reducing the need for intensive dental cleaning. For optimal results, it is recommended to use these products as part of a daily, consistent dental care routine.
Topical probiotic products for oral hygiene most commonly come as sprays or powders. Sprays are applied directly to the mouth, aiming for the gums or teeth, as the saliva will spread the probiotics around the mouth. Powders are added to food to ensure coating.
Eye care
Topical probiotics for the eyes are natural sprays that use beneficial bacteria to improve periocular health by cleaning and hydrating the area around the eyes. They restore the microbiome around the eyes to soothe irritation, reduce tear stains and remove allergen build-up. These products are particularly effective for pets with skin folds or significant crust build-up.
When it comes to the eyes, the spray is applied onto a clean cotton pad or lint-free gauze and gently wiped around the eyes and eyelids. The probiotics in the eye spray help alleviate irritation, combat environmental allergens such as pollen and minimise the risk of bacterial infections.
While not a probiotic product, there is also a seaweed-based oral supplement containing postbiotics (activated yeast) to support long-term macular health, tear production and eye comfort from the inside out. These products are not medicated and are designed to improve daily hygiene, not to replace veterinary advice for severe infections.
To put it simply, probiotic products don’t try to wipe everything out - they help the right microbes thrive. This makes them suitable for everyday use in pet care and cleaning routines, supporting hygiene and comfort in a more natural way.
As mentioned in the earlier article, the Ingenious Probiotics cleaning products can be used for cleaning around the home, and their topical probiotics can be used for pets; however, there are also other topical probiotic products available for pet care.
